Every week we talk to New York business owners still running critical systems on aging on-premise hardware — servers that are 5–8 years old, with no redundancy and no automated backups. The conversation always ends the same way: they know they need to move, but they don't know where to start.
The Migration Checklist
Phase 1: Discovery and Assessment (Weeks 1–2)
- Inventory every application, server, and database in your current environment
- Classify each workload: cloud-ready, needs modification, or must stay on-premise
- Map dependencies between systems — this is where most migrations go wrong
- Document current performance baselines
- Identify compliance requirements (HIPAA, PCI, SOC 2)
Phase 2: Cloud Provider Selection
AWS — deepest feature set, largest partner ecosystem, highest learning curve.
Microsoft Azure — best for Microsoft shops (Office 365, Dynamics, SharePoint).
Google Cloud — best if AI/ML capabilities are central to your roadmap.
Phase 3: Migration Strategy
Lift-and-shift (fastest, least disruptive), re-platforming (captures most cloud efficiencies), or re-architecting (highest effort, maximum long-term value). Choose based on risk tolerance and timeline.
Phase 4: Security and Compliance
- Implement IAM before migrating any data
- Configure encryption at rest and in transit
- Enable logging and monitoring from day one
Phase 5: Testing and Cutover
Never migrate production workloads without a tested rollback plan. Run parallel environments for at least two weeks before cutover. Schedule cutover during your lowest-traffic window.
